Somalia: Senior Al Shabaab commander surrenders
A senior Al-Shabaab commander Mohamed Abdullahi Hashi Iiro gave himself up to Somali government authorities in Garbaharey district in Gedo region on Monday, sources said.
The commander who was in charge of Al shabaab’s taxation activities in Tulo-Barqawo area near Garabaharey had earlier contacted local Govt officials in the town, asking to surrender.
It was highest-ranking al-Shabaab leader abandoned his life in the group and turned himself in since 2016. Al shabaab did not comment on the claim of the commander’s surrender.
Last December, an Al shabaab commander in charge of zakat surrendered to Jubbaland state forces Lower Jubba region after defecting from the militants controlling parts of Somalia.
The Somali government announced an amnesty offer late l2014 to members of the ‘al-Shabaab’, as it goes on with military offensive alongside Africa Union-backed force AMISOM.
